I probably dress a little nicer than I need to for work, but I like nice clothes and feel more comfortable in them than I do in casual clothes. I don't know if it makes a difference in how I have been treated and perceived, but I do know that I feel more confident when I wear them, and hopefully that aura pays off.KeAnnehttp://babywithatwist.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8315393574670249538.post-10594598365027259842013-11-12T10:01:52.897-06:002013-11-12T10:01:52.897-06:00My networking skills are 100% learned and forced (...My networking skills are 100% learned and forced (ie my inclination is to hide, not network). Mostly I show up and introduce myself to whomever I sit next to and that's it, but I also volunteer for committees where I get to sit next to important people, and often they start conversations with me so it's like networking by showing up and no effort. It&...When I was younger, I was hyper-aware of this. It's hard not to be when you're poor in the company of affluence. In college and graduate school, I made a point of building a wardrobe, and like you, I went for classic pieces that wear well. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that clothes and even bearing are not the only thing that people pay attention to. This is hard as a white woman; it's much, much worse for women of color. A very difficult family situation in which my suit, master's degree, and New York condescension didn't make a difference is what pushed me into law school. Now, I advocate for people who have a hard time being heard. I can assure you that it doesn't matter what I wear as a lawyer (to a point); the respect I get is far greater than I ever got as a teacher wearing a suit and expensive (but tasteful) jewelry. I've even absorbed some of the entitlement, and that genuine entitlement--people simply do not speak to me like THAT--goes further than anything else. It's fascinating, really.

On a slightly different note, it sounds like you're a great networker. I am AWFUL at networking for the sake of networking, and I'm always impressed by people who can do it. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8315393574670249538.post-30395460667179686682013-11-07T13:01:27.510-06:002013-11-07T13:01:27.510-06:00This is definitely a good reminder to me that it D...This is definitely a good reminder to me that it DOES matter how we dress / present ourselves to society. My boss and I were talking about this in relation to religion this morning (random, I know) and how we miss dressing up for "special" events like church. Sometimes I like that I live in a relaxed part of CO where jeans and t-shirts go for more anything... but it also lends an air of unprofessionalism and unimportance to events that perhaps deserve better. I am a teacher and I work at a school wear the only restrictions are I have to follow the students' dress code (basically no short skirts and no spaghetti straps) but otherwise I can wear whatever I want. I used to wear very "young" clothes to work, mostly jeans and tshirts. Now I wear more "adult" garb but I definitely don't dress "well". I've never owned a silk shirt or a suit and my only "slacks" are probably not really slacks at all. I wonder if the way I dress as affected my life in ways I didn't even realize. Hmmm, this is all so interesting....Esperanzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12375150088333673843noreply@blogger.com
